Finding the Time

Work and family life can get in the way of working out. The dilemma is that by working out we will be better able to tackle work and family life. Small changes can lead to big results, so choose some realistic goals and then be consistent.

Healthy Competition

It’s always fun to have a bit of healthy competition with your fitness. Group classes are great for this because they allow you to see how other people are progressing. This provides added motivation.  If you’ve made walking or running your health goal, why not compete with yourself? Buy a pedometer or fitness watch to track your steps and distance, then make it a goal to beat your last record.

Set an End Goal

It’s easy to ride the initial wave of excitement when you start a new workout program.  It’s harder to keep that momentum going. Setting an end goal can help by giving you something to work towards.  This could be as simple as a weight you’d like to reach, or a race you’d like to run.  

Get Creative

Thanks to online workouts and fitness DVDs, you don’t even have to step outside your front door to workout. Online programs offer detailed advice and tips on what exercises to do and for which parts of the body. Home gym equipment makes it easy to organize your time and effort.  Get your kids involve and hold races outside. Use backyard objects to make an obstacle course.  

Make it a Priority

Make fitness a top priority.  With the huge impact it has on your life, it really should be! Schedule your workouts at the beginning of each week and it will help you focus on your goal. Remember to be flexible, because sometimes schedules change. Writing out a plan makes it seem set in stone and you will be more likely to stick to it.

Early Morning

If you exercise first thing in the morning, you are less likely to make excuses to get out of it. Exercising in the evening might be your only option, but by the end of a busy day it’s hard to stay motivated. Try to get your workout out of the way right off the bat and see how it positively influences your whole day!

Hit the Gym

Gym memberships are the standard way to get a good workout.  Most provide group classes, child care, cardio machines and weight lifting equipment.  The big drawback is that they can be expensive. Consider joining your local YMCA, which offers discounted memberships based on income. Many other gyms offer monthly specials that amount to no more than a few cups of coffee.
